SumaGrow® and Myanmar to Expand Organic Production

Hattiesburg, MS, July, 2016 - A delegation from Myanmar is arriving at Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. (BSEI) Thursday for high-level meetings to discuss their partnership on a pilot project to increase organic rice cultivation in the country using products containing SumaGrow®. Included in the delegation is Dr. Ye Tint Tun, Director General, Department of Agriculture, Dr. Maung Maung Tar, Director, Department of Agriculture Research, Dr. Htay Htay Soe, assistant, Ms. Ohn Mar Aye, Economic Attache, Myanmar Embassy in Washington, and Pete Girgis, President of GrowPros, a company licensed to sell products containing SumaGrow®.

U Ye Min Aung, Secretary General of the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) and Managing Director of Myanmar Agribusiness Public Corporation (MAPCO), is quoted as saying, “What percentage of the nation’s (agriculture sector) should be organic? There should be a possibility of five or ten percent. To be able to do this, it should be started with pilot projects.” Although organic production took root in the South East Asian country around 1990, only around 130 acres of the nation’s farmland is currently utilized for organic cultivation.

After observing the success of the trials using SumaGrow® for organic rice production in Vietnam, representatives on behalf of Myanmar and GrowPros began talks with BSEI about a potential partnership for the purpose of increasing organic production in the country while reducing input costs. SumaGrow® is an award-winning agricultural biological and has demonstrated the ability to increase crop yields 15 to 20 percent on average and reduce fertilizer inputs by 25 to 75 percent, depending on the crop and farm management regime.

Wayne Wade, President of BSEI recently flew to Washington, DC, to meet with the Kyaw Myo Htut, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and Ms. Ohn Mar Aye at the Embassy of the Union of Myanmar to continue dialogue and open further discussion regarding continued development of the partnership to propel Myanmar’s organic production and increase SumaGrow sales in Asia.

The Myanmar delegation to arrive Thursday will take a guided walk through the manufacturing plant, tour the laboratories, and speak directly with the microbiologist, field scientists, and director of quality control. Throughout the discussions current product performance demonstrations will be presented. The delegation will also be given a tour of current field trials and farmland from around the state using products containing SumaGrow®.

Drew Pigott, Field Services Coordinator for BSEI, will be in attendance as he will be traveling to Myanmar to initiate, develop, and oversee the implementation of the Myanmar rice trials. The trials will be ongoing, replicated, and will measure rice quality and yield, with a reduction in fertilizer, among other data points. Mr. Pigott’s role is pivotal as the success of these trials will open many markets for BSEI and SumaGrow®.

Myanmar is 261 square miles (about the size of Texas) and boasts some of the most fertile soil in the world. Around 60 to 70 percent of Myanmar’s population are smallhold farmers and close to 90 percent of these farmers depend on rice for subsistence.

BSEI has researched and developed microbial technology for over two decades. Anticipating the urgency to move toward more sustainable farming and agricultural conservation, BSEI developed SumaGrow® biologicals specifically to maximize crop yields while decreasing agriculture’s environmental impact, including reducing fertilizer inputs and improving the water-efficiency of the soil.

SumaGrow®’s award-winning microbial blend is found in agricultural products worldwide and allows farmers to successfully transition from chemical based growing methods to more sustainable, biological methods without compromising yields. Products containing SumaGrow® replace or reintroduce vital soil microorganisms that are lost or damaged by conventional farming methods including the overuse of chemical based fertilizers and pesticides and the removal of organic matter when crops are harvested.

In 2015 BSEI was selected as a new “moonshot” project by the Google driven Solve for X (SFX) initiative for its potential to change the future of farming, in 2014 the company was awarded the Mississippi Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Exporting, in 2013 and 2014 BSEI was ranked 2nd and 4th consecutively on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing private U.S companies in manufacturing, and has been recognized by Forbes.com, Hemispheres Magazine, Barron’s and Corn & Soybean Digest among other publications. BSEI increased international sales to Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Greece, Hungary, Nigeria, Philippines, Romania, Thailand and Vietnam to its already impressive list of international exports. Additionally, BSEI recently gained sales, distribution and manufacturing rights in New Zealand.

“Our increase in sales and growth are a direct reflection of our products’ performance,” said Wade. “We have an excellent team who has worked hard to get us where we are and who continues to ensure that we manufacture the highest quality products for the highest quality crops.

“Globally, by 2050 we must roughly double the amount of food we grow today while using less land and less water resources. These are real challenges for agricultural producers and I believe that products containing SumaGrow® are a central part of the solution. We look forward to introducing our products to the governments and farming communities in Myanmar and developing relationships that forward our mission of leaving a legacy of good stewardship to the generations that follow us.”

SumaGrow Selected as Google “moonshot”

Hattiesburg, MS, January 30, 2015 - The Google driven Solve for X (SFX) has chosen a new “moonshot” project that has the potential to change the future of farming and it is called SumaGrow.

As one of the four finalists selected by the Google Developer Group (GDG) North Jersey, the microbial technology of SumaGrow was chosen, in part, for its ability to reduce the use of chemical fertilizer, increase the quality and quantity of foods, recover unusable land and protect water resources.

“We’ve been completely blown away by the level of talent that we’ve discovered during the course of this regional search,” said Todd Nakamura, founder of GDG North Jersey. “We’ve met visionaries who are bringing education to remote areas of the world, addressing the global issue of CO2 emissions from many different angles, working on technology to bring clean drinking water to areas where it previously wasn’t possible, and even a breakthrough in cancer research.” First introduced in 2012 with two events, the company has since expanded the SFX initiative to 12 events hosted by partners worldwide. Google chose two U.S. sites, one being the East Coast competition spearheaded by GDG North Jersey.

Lou Elwell, CEO of Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. (BSEI), the manufacturer of products containing SumaGrow, will present the technology at the final regional event on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University on February 2 and may be invited to present at a special event in front of an audience consisting of such notables as Google founders Larry Page, Sergey Brin and “Captain of Moonshots” Astro Teller. All the finalists featured in this main event will have their 12-minute presentation posted on the SFX site.

"Presenting to professionals from science and technology fields who have a working knowledge of what we do is exciting. It was very encouraging to see that the audience "got it" and understood the significance of what our products can do,” Elwell said after presenting the technology of SumaGrow at the preliminary SFX event at Montclair State University in December.

SumaGrow is an award-winning microbial blend found in agricultural products worldwide that allows farmers to successfully transition from chemical based growing methods to more sustainable, biological methods without losing yields. Products containing SumaGrow replace or reintroduce vital soil microorganisms that are lost or damaged by conventional farming methods including the overuse of chemical based fertilizers and pesticides and the removal of organic matter when crops are harvested.

“Being recognized by Google is noteworthy,” Elwell said. “Our company has reached an exciting stage of steady growth in sales and brand recognition. It is very rewarding to see that our hard work is paying off.”

BSEI was awarded the 2014 Mississippi Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Exporting in December, and was ranked 2nd and 4th consecutively on the 2013 and 2014 Inc. 500 list of fastest growing private U.S companies in manufacturing. BSEI increased international sales by 1,245% since 2013 and recently added Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Greece, Hungary, Nigeria, Philippines, Romania, Thailand and Vietnam to its already impressive list of international exports. Additionally, BSEI gained sales, distribution and manufacturing rights in New Zealand.

“Our increase in sales and growth are a direct reflection of our product’s performance,” said Wayne Wade, President of BSEI. “We have an excellent team who has worked hard to get us where we are and who continues to ensure that we manufacture the highest quality products for the highest quality crops.”

The technology of SumaGrow was recognized by Popular Science in 2011 as the Grand Award Winner in the Green category for its ability to increase forage yields and decrease fertilizer and water inputs; won the Illinois Yield Challenge in the district it was entered in 2011; was highlighted by Popular Science magazine in 2009 as a solution to address the world’s exploding food needs; and has been recognized by Forbes.com, Hemispheres Magazine, and Corn & Soybean Digest among others.

And what about this latest opportunity with Solve for X? “We have a very real challenge ahead of us, and products containing SumaGrow are part of the solution. We look forward to introducing our products to a new audience and developing relationships that forward our mission of leaving a legacy of good stewardship to the generations that follow us,” said Wade.

SFX is a global initiative from Google seeking pioneers in science and technology who have bold solutions for monumental challenges, and these life-changing projects are called “moonshots.” To qualify for a “moonshot” the idea has to solve a big problem; has to be a radical, science-fiction like solution; and has to be doable. Google plans to share these pioneers’ stories and projects with the world and inspire others to drive innovation.

Mississippi Company Ranks as the 4th Fastest-Growing Private Manufacturing Company by Inc. Magazine

Hattiesburg, MS, August 29, 2014 - Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. (BSEI) ranked 2nd on the 2014 Inc. 500 list of fastest growing private U.S. companies for the state of Mississippi and #4 overall for manufacturing. Additionally, Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. was ranked #297 out of the top 5,000 companies in the United States.

BSEI, the sole manufacturer of products containing SumaGrow, was recognized for its astounding 3-year growth of over 1,500% for 2013. This award-winning microbial technology increases crop quality and yields while decreasing chemical fertilizer inputs.

In development since 2003, products containing SumaGrow are now being utilized worldwide in over 40 countries by farmers producing virtually every crop type from traditional row and truck crops to citrus groves and coffee plantations. SumaGrow works from the ground up to restore and maintain soil health for the long term benefits of achieving maximum crop performance while lowering fertilizer use by a minimum of 50%.

“Products containing SumaGrow support the producer while protecting our resources,” said Wayne Wade, President of BSEI. “People are more aware that over-fertilization is harmful to our land and water resources. SumaGrow-containing products reduce fertilizer use without compromising crop performance. It’s a perfect balance between science and nature.”

SumaGrow has been tested and the benefits validated by major universities, independent consultants and specialty testing facilities. However, Wade says that sales of products containing SumaGrow are driven by grass roots marketing and farmer satisfaction. Although some meetings may happen in the board room of a large food supplier, much business is conducted under a good shade tree or around a kitchen table of a local farmer. The producer that tries a product containing SumaGrow on 100 acres the first year will most often treat their entire operation by the second or third year.

BSEI’s goal is to support producers in profitable farming through increased yields while addressing the many challenges that face the future of food production- including land degradation, soil erosion and nutrient runoff, and water eutrophication and pollution. Products containing SumaGrow offer sustainable solutions that protect natural resources for the next generation.

In addition, products containing SumaGrow are increasingly being utilized for recreational turfs and golf courses. Both industries are under scrutiny for negatively impacting the environment through excessive fertilization and irrigation.

Dr. Lalithakumari Janarthanam, Director of Research & Development at BSEI, and her team continue to expand the technology of SumaGrow. “We are developing new products that may be used on a broad spectrum of crops to help them overcome environmental stresses. It is very exciting to know that SumaGrow products support farmers while positively impacting our environment,” she stated.

The technology of SumaGrow was recognized by Popular Science in 2011 as the Grand Award Winner in the Green category for its ability to increase forage yields and decrease fertilizer and water inputs; won the Illinois Yield Challenge in the district it was entered in 2011, was highlighted by Popular Science magazine in 2009 as a solution to address the world’s exploding food needs; and has been recognized by Forbes.com, Hemispheres Magazine, and Corn & Soybean Digest among others.

Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. Ranks as the 2nd Fastest-Growing Private Manufacturing Company by Inc. Magazine

Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. ranked 2nd on the 2013 Inc. 500 list of fastest growing private U.S. companies for manufacturing and 77th overall. Additionally, Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. (BSEI) was named as the #1 fastest growing company for all categories in the state of Mississippi.

BSEI, the sole manufacturer of products containing SumaGrow, was recognized for its astounding 3-year growth of over 4,000% and revenue of almost $5 million for 2012. The award-winning technology of SumaGrow is a proprietary blend of microbes that has demonstrated the ability to increase crop quality and yields while decreasing dependence on chemical fertilizers.

In development since 2003, products containing SumaGrow are now being utilized worldwide in over 40 countries by farmers producing virtually every crop type from traditional row and truck crops in the US Midwest, to citrus groves in Florida, to forage and hay crops in Italy, and cacao in Brazil. SumaGrow works from the ground up to restore and maintain soil health for the long term benefits of achieving maximum crop performance while lowering input costs by an average of 50%.

The technology has been tested and benefits validated by numerous major universities, independent consultants and specialty testing facilities. However, sales of products containing SumaGrow are driven by grass roots marketing and farmer satisfaction. Because sales are generated through independent licensees, each has its own target market and unique approach. Although some meetings may happen in the board room of a large food supplier, much business is conducted under a good shade tree or around a kitchen table of a local farmer. The producer that tries a product containing SumaGrow on 100 acres the first year will most often treat their entire operation by the second or third year. In agriculture, word of mouth is a key driving force and seeing is believing.

BSEI’s goal is to support producers in profitable farming while addressing the many challenges that face the future of food production- including land degradation, soil erosion and nutrient runoff, and water eutrophication and pollution- and offer sustainable solutions that preserve natural resources for the next generation.

In addition, products containing SumaGrow are increasingly being utilized for recreational turfs and golf courses. Both industries are under fire for their negative environmental impact resulting from high fertilization and watering demands.

Dr. Lalithakumari Janarthanam, co-inventor and Director of Research & Development at BSEI, continues to expand the technology of SumaGrow. “It is very exciting to know that SumaGrow products have the potential to make a big difference to the environment,” she stated.

Despite Severe Drought, Farmer Produces Crop Due to Use of Microbial Product

Broughton, Illinois, August 27, 2012 - In one of the worst droughts in 50 years Kevin Delap, a row crop producer who farms over 2,500 acres, says his corn is “making” because of the microbial formulation in SumaGrow. According to Delap the neighboring farms have little to no crop left, “They just burned up.”

Delap initially purchased products containing SumaGrow, a pioneering microbial technology developed by Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc. (BSEI) to improve soil fertility and plant health, in 2011 in an effort to increase his bottom line. According to Delap, “Producers can expect to reduce their fertilizer input costs by a minimum of 50% in most cases.” Skeptical the first year, Delap continued his conventional fertilizer program along with the SumaGrow product. Delap was pleased with the results.

After his initial success, Delap followed closer to recommended 50% fertilizer reduction schedule for this year’s corn rotation and is delighted with the results. Delap said he used zero potash and phosphate and reduced nitrogen by 20%. Conventional fertilization programs can cost upwards of $162 per acre for corn and other row crops. For large scale production that can translate into over $400,000 per year, not including pesticide costs.

For Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc., fertilizer reduction when using products containing SumaGrow is a pivotal benefit for both producers and consumers. Research points to the overuse of chemical fertilizers as the root cause of much land degradation, reduction of the nutrients in foods and grasses, and water eutrophication and pollution. Microbes naturally increase the success rate of fertilizer inputs therefore decreasing the amount needed and the frequency of its application.

Wayne Wade, president and co-founder of Bio Soil Enhancers, Inc., said he believes that microbial products are the key to the next green revolution. “We cannot continue to produce in unsustainable methods and expect to meet the global demand for food and water. We have limited resources and are quickly running out of time.”

So how can microbial products help reverse the damage done to once arable land? Microorganisms play a vital role in nutrient cycling and disease suppression. Microbes capture nitrogen from the atmosphere, make it available to plants, and carry out processes responsible for soil fertility. Wade points out that SumaGrow contains the highest microbial content that he knows of on the market today. “The microbes in products containing SumaGrow were selected for their abilities to work together to increase crop production while reducing fertilizer inputs and water use. BSEI’s microbial formulation restores and maintains a healthy and fertile soil environment.” Wade points to years of university research.

Michigan State University conducted three years of testing on the SumaGrow technology and concluded that, “To the best of our knowledge there is no microbial formulation on the market today that is specifically designed to contain a comprehensive set of microbial groups with multiple complementary functions and with documented efficacy for substantially increasing productivity of such a broad spectrum of important pulses, cereals, vegetable, and forage crops as reported here. Heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that are often employed for increasing crop productivity now result in leaching of nitrates which at high levels pose a health hazard to humans.”

Since then the technology of SumaGrow has been tested by numerous universities, specialized research facilities and independent producers on various crops. Currently, products containing SumaGrow are in well over 100 national and international trials, including Italy, Canada, Dominican Republic, Vietnam and Honduras. These trials include a broad spectrum of crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, coffee, rice, bananas, energy cane, oil palms, and tomatoes.

“We are working with major universities and food producers to gather the vital field data needed to continue to grow the scope of our technology and to demonstrate the significant contribution SumaGrow makes in improving crop quality and yield, and reducing fertilizer inputs.”

But for producers like Delap, whose family has been farming for generations, seeing is believing. Delap had to see it work on his farm first and now his neighbors are talking. “It took me 1 ½ hours just to get from inside the bank back to my truck,” Delap said. “They all want to know what I’m doing.”

And he is happy to tell them.

Forage Boost, an agricultural soil amendment formulated specifically for forages and hay crops, contains SumaGrow, a revolutionary blend of non-genetically modified microbes, selected for their abilities to increase plant nutrient uptake, build soil organic matter and promote a balanced soil pH. Forage Boost has been field tested by independent PhD’s, independent testing facilities and major universities in 25 separate field trials in 13 states comparing its effectiveness to conventional fertilizer on a variety of grasses in different climates and soil conditions. The results showed that crops treated with SumaGrow had higher yields, increased nutrient values and reduced water consumption than crops treated with conventional fertilizers.

SumaGrow was invented by lead researchers Dr. C.A. Reddy, an internationally known microbiologist and professor at Michigan State University and Dr. Lalithakumari Janarthanam, a distinguished microbiologist and plant pathologist, who continues to expand the technology of SumaGrow. “It is very exciting to know that SumaGrow has the potential to make a big difference to the environment,” Dr. Lalithakumar said, “SumaGrow increases the brix value (the total sugar content) of grasses. Sweet-tasting grasses speed the growth of cattle and sheep and lower greenhouse gasses.”
